HAIRCUT 100: Day 11, No. 11. Joanna Rowsell Shand MBE, English cyclist and reigning Olympic and European champion in the team pursuit, and Commonwealth Games champion in the individual pursuit. Born in 1988, Jo was selected for the British Cycling’s Talent Team programme while still at school in 2004, coming to prominence the following year when she won the British National Track Championships pursuit. Jo has suffered from alopecia areata since childhood, and her win in the women’s cycling team pursuit at the Olympic velodrome last Saturday (August 6) coincided with International Alopecia Day, an annual awareness day in which people with alopecia from all over the world share a photo of themselves. As she completed a lap of honour after winning record-breaking Olympic gold with team mates Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, and Elinor Barker she pulled off her helmet to proudly reveal her bald head – go girl! ‘I’ve never really seen myself as an inspiration or anything like that…’
