Day 24, No. 24. Morpheus

MorpheusHAIRCUT 100: Day 24, No. 24. Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus in The Matrix. Essentially playing John the Baptist to Keanu Reeves’ Jesus, the equally Cartesian Morpheus belongs to an elite group of metaphysical action heroes who can actually pull off a black leather great coat and shades when pushing forty. An inspirational leader and mentor, Morpheus operates emotionally and intellectually on faith and absolute philosophical scepticism, knowing at once that the world of the Matrix is no more real than Descartes’ dream, while preaching the imminent return of The One. Also allegorically related the god of dreams in Greek mythology, this Morpheus represents the ever-popular ‘donor’ or ‘magical helper’ archetype within the structure of a fairy tale, a character that tests the hero, providing magical assistance when he succeeds; the hero often meeting this figure in a liminal space between two worlds, in fairy tales often symbolised by a wood. So would you take the blue pill or the red? ‘What is real? How do you define “real”? If you’re talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, what you can taste and see, then “real” is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain.’
