Day 26, No. 26. Tor Johnson

Plan 9 From Outer SpaceHAIRCUT 100: Day 26, No. 26. Tor Johnson, ‘The Super Swedish Angel’ and ‘The Beast of Yucca Flats.’ A trail-blazing wrestler turned actor, Tore Johansson was born in Kalmar län, Sweden in 1903. He moved to Hollywood in the 1930s and began picking up uncredited bit parts as movie villains, for example playing Jack the Ripper in Shadow of the Thin Man (1941) with William Powell and Myrna Loy, and ‘The Mauler’ in Raoul Walsh’s Gentleman Jim (1942), starring Errol Flynn. Although he was actually blessed with thick black hair, Tor shaved his head to maintain an imposing and threatening appearance both onscreen and in the ring. Not a looker, Tor’s nonetheless unforgettable features are most recognizable from his collaborations with close friend Edward D. Wood Jr, most notably Bride of the Monster (1955), in which he played Lobo, the mute assistant of Dr. Eric Vornoff (Bela Lugosi), and Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), where he is the lead zombie alongside Vampira. Tor died of heart failure in 1971, aged 68, but he lives on as an iconic movie monster and popular Halloween mask. In 1994, Tor was played by the wrestler George ‘The Animal’ Steele in Tim Burton’s beautiful biopic, Ed Wood. ‘Don’t mind Lobo. He’s as harmless as a kitchen.’
