Day 60, No. 60. Nik Fiend

Alien Sex FiendHAIRCUT 100: Day 60, No. 60. Nik Fiend: Artist, musician, singer, songwriter, Alien Sex Fiend. This wonderful maniac and his work has been a personal inspiration for well over thirty years now. I love my battered ASF vinyl collection as much as my motorcycle, and have had both for about as long, while seeing the Fiends on stage has been one of the most memorable concert experiences of my life. Formed at the Batcave Club in 1982, Alien Sex Fiend were so far ahead of the curve when it came to the emergent ‘Goth’ scene that they might as well have come, as Nik sang, from another planet; their dark, electronic industrial beats, trippy drum machines, analogue synths, heavy samples, loops, dub remixes and phantasmagorical vocals blowing all that vanilla ‘New Romantic’ bollocks in the charts out of the water like a rotting galleon full of possessed zombie pirates. ‘Skulls, bemused ghouls and recurring nightmares,’ wrote one US reviewer, ‘Combine the three and you have the genesis of Alien Sex Fiend as well as the art of its singer.’

An on-going project of husband and wife team Nik and Christine Wade – ‘Mr. and Mrs. Fiend’ – the nearest cultural correlative is probably Lux and Ivy of The Cramps: innovative, massively influential, and one of the best kept secrets in rock ’n’ roll. To find a way in, seminal and decidedly strange albums include: Who’s Been Sleeping in My Brain?; Acid Bath; Maximum Security; Another Planet; Cursed; Open Head Surgery; and Death Trip. (‘Classic Album’ 4 CD boxsets are now available.) I’m happy to report that Nik and the Fiends are still recording, still touring, and still painting. As they say on their website: ‘Like H.R. Giger’s facehugger-to-adult Alien metamorphosis, Alien Sex Fiend in the 21st century aren’t a different band than say, the 1990s incarnation, or the Fiends of 1984. They are simply a more advanced form of the very same, very special beastie, genetically modified for the times.’
