Day 77, No. 77. Stewie Griffin

Stewie RaygunHAIRCUT 100: Day 77, No. 77. Stewart Gilligan Griffin: evil genius, supervillain, time-traveller, cross-dresser, and baby brother. (Probably gay.) Created and voiced by Seth MacFarlane, Stewie Griffin could be argued to be the gothic double of the angelic Maggie Simpson, just as his older siblings, Chris and Meg, are useless inversions of Bart and Lisa. (A case could similarly be made for evil Charlie Brown.) In a first season episode of Family Guy entitled ‘Chitty Chitty Death Bang,’ Stewie was shown turning one year old, and he has remained at that age ever since, the character written in such a way that a very adult persona seamlessly co-exists with the infant; he can build a machine that travels between multiverses, but he cannot feed himself or change his nappy: ‘Hello, mother. I come bearing a gift. I’ll give you a hint. It’s in my diaper and it’s not a toaster.’ Stewie started out as a kind of baby suburban Bond villain, but the character has evolved and deepened over the years, with his original matricidal psychopathology softened by his friendship with Brian the dog – his only near intellectual equal in the family – and his love of belting out a good showtune. His distinctive voice seems to be Rik Mayall meets Rex Harrison, and who can and cannot understand him is as fluid as the character’s ambivalent sexuality in the show. Stewie is considered to be Family Guy’s ‘breakout character,’ and his episodes with Brian (following the ‘Road to’ formula of the films of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby), are consistently the most popular. During my son’s birth, I wore a Stewie Griffin T-shirt for luck and a bit of mojo transfer, and have been paying for what I wished for ever since. ‘Victory is mine!’Stephen and Vincent Carver Day One
